French toast is one of the best breakfast foods and I am always looking for new ways to give it a twist.
I haven’t done a recipe or cooking hack post in a while & thought sharing a few creative French Toast tips would get me back in the practice of writing about something other than books, lol.
Tip #1: SPICE IT UP
I have tried adding several spices to my french toast batter. For the base I use eggs, vanilla extract, and sugar free Italian Sweet Cream coffee creamer. YES, coffee creamer instead of milk! It’s flavored & non dairy which works beautifully. Here are a few of the spices I’ve thrown in: pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel, Chinese five spice, lemon peel, mace, and clove.
Tip #2: TRY OTHER BREADS
While white or wheat toast is the regular pick, I’ve experimented with several different breads. Most of them work (stay away from pastries and croissants). Here are some good ones to try: brioche, raisin bread, hamburger buns (seriously), unfrosted cinnamon rolls, fresh bagels, English Muffins. ***Try angel food cake or pound cake French toast as a desert.***
My aunt found my favorite French toast bread at Trader Joe’s, but they don’t always have it in stock. If you ever see a bag of unfrosted cinnamon rolls (looking like bagels without holes) there, buy them out! They freeze beautifully & make the best French toast!!!!!!!
Tip #3: USE YOUR WAFFLE IRON
Using the waffle iron for french toast makes making large batches fast & easy. It’s perfect for mornings with family in from out of town, when you’re trying to feed more mouths in a hurry. Just batter your toast as usual (you’ll want to use regular sandwich bread for this one for fit) and spray your iron with butter spray. You can crank out 4 slices of PERFECT french toast every few minutes. They’re extra crispy and perfectly browned. These are also great to make a batch, cut into French toast strips, and freeze for a morning when you have no time.
Tip #4: GO CRAZY
French Toast can handle a lot more than syrup – although sugar free maple syrup is still my go to. Try these toppings: honey, fruit, nuts, peanut butter, nutella, whipped cream, cream cheese frosting, whipped cream cheese, or jellies.
