I read, constantly. I write up my reviews in the way that I read my books, in short stacks of four…
Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows – I read the Potter books over every Christmas/New Years season. One of the reasons I reread certain books is that I am in a different mindset each year, and as a result, I take different things away from each read… We lost my husband’s father and uncle right before the new year. It’s been – a very difficult time. I was surprised to recognize, in the Potter series, so many comforting quotes about death. So much so that it may become a go-to series to read when grieving. It was a real comfort. #always
How the Marquis Got His Coat Back (A Neverwhere Story) – Neverwhere is one of my favorite Neil Gaiman novels. I downloaded this companion short story ages ago and kept setting it aside. It was nice to revisit that London Below universe. It was a little too short for me – I wanted more. Basically, it just made me want to reread Neverwhere this year…adding it to my list.
Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for Ultrahuman Protection – SO DAMN FUNNY. Imagine a Leslie Knope type gets a job as an administrative assistant for the top executive at a Men In Black-esque organization. Hilarious descriptions of office & marketing humor, mixed with super heroes, aliens, and a memorable cast of characters. Witty dialogue, fast paced, laugh out loud situations. It was the PERFECT distraction from *everything*.
Braving the Wilderness – My friends & I all read this buzzed about book this month. It’s my second Brene Brown title (I loved The Gifts of Imperfection). I felt like this was two different books. When I started it – the personal vulnerability stories were almost more than I could handle (rough week). It was well written and honest, as my cousins would say – “it had all the feels”. I just didn’t want to feel a lot when I read it. I almost put it down, but I’m glad I pushed through. The second half of the book about conflict, judgement, and self resonated with me and was excellent. I will be rereading this one for sure.
